In the evening villagers set the coffin at the shrine and ran away. At midnight the beasts came and sang as before;
"Shippei Taro at Kozenji, Shinshu
Don't tell him about us
Don't let him know about us
Shippei Taro at Kozenji, Shinshu
Don't tell him about us
Don't let him know about us"
The hungry beasts took the lid of the coffin. That instant the priest and Hayataro leapt out The brave priest drew a sword and Hayataro bared his fangs. Shouts echoed over the shrine yard and the battle lasted until dawn.
In the morning light, people found giant monkeys lying dead everywhere and they saw the priest sitting near Hayataro. Hayataro was bleeding to death.
The priest and villagers did their best to cure Hayataro. Some days
later Hayataro slipped out of the village and walked for Shinshu. But when
he reached the top of Kannonyama(観音山), he fell down at the foot of a
big gingko tree and took his last breath.
Villagers buried Hayataro at the place. They enshrined him and handed down the tale ever after. main
