At midnight on that day, loud noises broke the silence. The teraotoko jumped out of bed and found the noises were echoing from the hondo, the main hall of the temple. He went and got the osho, but both were frightened and couldn't step into the hondo. They decided to wait till the noises stopped. They noticed they hadn't awoken the traveling priest, but they couldn't find him anywhere in the temple.
The noises went on till dawn broke. The osho and the teraotoko made sure no more sounds were echoing and crept into the hall . There they saw something dripping from the ceiling onto the floor. It was making a pool... a pool of blood. The osho asked the teraotoko to bring village people for help.
Timidly the people went up to the attic and found two cats lying on the floor. The cats were Mike and her friend cat. They both were dying. Some meters away from the cats, there was another animal lying. It was not a cat. It was a rat, an amazingly big one, dog-sized one. Strangely enough, it wore a priest costume the same as the traveling priest's clothes. Seeing this, people guessed and talked," That priest must be the monster rat. It aimed at Osho and disguised as the priest to eat him.""The cats noticed it and protected Osho from the monster rat."
Though the osho and the village people tried everything to save them, Mike and her friend died. They buried the cats near the temple and built a stone monument. Later it was called "Neko-zuka (grave of cats)".
When people took the body of the monster rat to throw it into the sea, the rat opened its eyes. It pleaded, "Please don't throw me away. Bury my body here, please." "If you are kind enough to do that, I'll surely make life at sea safe. "
People accepted the rat's wish and built a grave for it. It was called "Nezumi-zuka(grave of rats)". As promised, the ships passed the cape safer from that time on.
Today there is no temple but you can see both Neko-zuka and Nezumi-zuka near the Cape of Omaezaki.
