--------------Hina-dolls-------------- | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
March 3rd is called HINA-MATSURI or Girls’ Festival. Families with girls display
ohinasama or hina-dolls in their homes and wish for the girls to grow up healthy. Shizuoka has many factories for making hina-dolls. Each doll part is made individually in different areas. Heads are not made in Shizuoka but in another prefecture. However, body parts and miniature furniture are mainly made in Shizuoka. On the Izu Peninsula, hanging hina-dolls are traditional. These hanging hina-dolls are now getting popular in other places too. It is not difficult to make them. Please try to make them if you like. Every year new hina-dolls called kawari-bina dolls are made. These dolls are connected with that year’s big news event or highlights. |

--------------Paper-------------- | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Do you have a personal computer?
Some students have them, but others don’t. However, we usually have notebooks,
and often we write something in them everyday. These notebooks are made
of paper. Fuji City is the main place famous for making paper. Factories in Fuji City make many types of paper, including tissue, rolled paper, toilet paper, and many other types. A long time ago, Heizaemon Watanabe discovered mitsumata, a type of plant at the foot of Mt. Fuji. To make paper, mitsumata plants are cut into small pieces. Then they are put into pure water, mixed with paste and pressed into thin sheets. A lot of fresh spring water flows from Mt. Fuji down into Fuji City. There are also many forests in the area to grow plants. This helps to make Fuji City a great place for making paper. So, next time you are using any kind of paper, please think of Fuji City! |

--------------Bamboo Arts and Wood Crafts -------------- | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Do you know Dr. Philipp Franz von Siebold? In 19th century, he studied not
only medicine but also zoology, ethnology, and botany. He visited Japan, and traveled from Dejima, Nagasaki to Edo (Tokyo). On his way to Edo, he wrote a diary. He thought that the bamboo arts and
wood crafts in Shizuoka had high quality, and were skillful and elegant. Now, we often use bamboo arts in our daily lives. For example, as an insect cage, a vase, or even a t-shaped flying toy. We also use wooden crafts that are made in Shizuoka. Some of them are made with no nails, and painted with lacquer. These wooden crafts include desks, cases for ink stones, drawers, tables, and geta. These traditions of bamboo arts and wooden crafts have developed into the industries of making sandals and plastic models in Shizuoka Prefecture. |
