Some kanji have different meanings between Chinese and Japanese because Japanese people made their own words with Chinese charcters in the old days. The Japanese word "手紙" is expressed by the Chinese character "信".
中国から日本に伝わった漢字は、日本で一人歩きするようになり、漢字を使って自由に名前をつけるようになった。そのため、まったく別のものをさすことがある。ちなみに中国語で手紙は「信」という字を使う。
